What should I do while recovering from PRK?

Tips for Recovering from PRK

Patients recovering from PRK should take special care to follow all of their surgeon's post-operative instructions to ensure optimal recovery. This is important because failure to follow these instructions carefully can have an adverse impact on the outcome of the procedure. Each surgeon may have a unique set of guidelines for patient's recovering from PRK, but listed below are some of the common recommendations encouraged by most surgeons:

  • Drink plenty of water to keep the body hydrated and encourage healing
  • Applying ice packs for 20 minute intervals can ease discomfort
  • Eye drops prescribed for use during the recovery process should be used according to the surgeon's instructions
  • Smoky rooms and rooms with chemical smells should be avoided
  • Sunglasses should be worn outdoors and even indoors, if light sensitivity is severe
  • Avoid strenuous physical activity as recommended by the surgeon
