Comparing LASIK vs. LASEK

The-Lasik-Directory.com Tip: A side by side comparison of LASIK surgery vs. LASEK surgery reveals the two procedures are very similar. Additionally the results of a study published in the December 2006 issue of the American Journal of Ophthalmology showed no significant differences in the results produced by the two different procedures. However, there are some differences in the procedure itself, as well as the recovery period.

Listed below are some of the similarities in LASIK vs. LASEK:

· Both procedures can be used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia

· Both procedures are outpatients procedures which take approximately 15 minutes and require less than one minute of laser treatment for each eye

· Both procedures require the surgeon to create a flap in the cornea

Listed below are some differences in LASIK vs. LASEK:

  • In LASIK, the epithelium and stroma are cut to a thickness of 100-180 microns, while in LASEK only the epithelium is cut to a thickness of 50 microns
  • In LASIK, the recovery period is two days to one week and patients are allowed to drive after one to three days, while in LASEK the recovery period is four to seven days and patients are allowed to drive in approximately one week
  • There is less discomfort involved in LASIK than LASEK
  • LASEK has less of a risk of dry eye than LASIK
  • LASEK destroys less cornea tissue than LASIK
